Betel Leaf is popularly known as “Paan” in India and the betel vine leaves are in deep green color with heart shape which is widely used in India and the scientific name of betel vine is Piper betel. In the world, there are more than 90 varieties of betel leaf, out of which about 45 are found in India and 30 varieties in West Bengal. The Betel leaf is a vine of the family Piperaceae, which includes pepper and Kava. Betel leaf is mostly consumed in Asia, and elsewhere in the world by some Asian emigrants, as betel quid or in paan, with areca nut and or tobacco. Betel leaf is grown in tropics and subtropics for its evergreen leaves that are used in pooja/religious event and as a chewing stimulant’s. Mostly in our India having the paan after the meals for digestion, Its also used in India at auspicious occasions like a wedding or any festival.

Who would not know about Betel Leaf or Paan? People across the country enjoy paan, paan is also used in auspicious functions like pooja, etc. Also, do you know that paan also acts like an herb, and paan has many medicinal properties Do you know that headache, eye disease, ear pain, mouth disease, use of betel leaf in winter of children can be beneficial. Betel leaf grows very well in a tropical climate with high rainfall and shady places are the best for its vigorous growth. Betel leaf or paan can be grown in a wide range of soils such as sandy loam, heavy clay loam. supplementing the soil with good organic matter for best result to growth and higher yield. Soil should have good drainage as well, land should be raised by 5 – 10 cm from the adjacent areas and soil should be prepared by 4 to 5 ploughings, providing proper drainage. After the field of size is prepared in 15 cm height and 30 cm wide, Soil should be sterilized thoroughly before planting the betel leaf. When the soil temperature rises during the March month to May month, the soil should be covered by polyethylene sheets in order of soil borne pathogens. 

October month is the best betel leaf season for plantation under the open ground cultivation. Since betel leaf needs high soil moisture content, frequent light watering is required depending upon the season of the crop. Irrigation should be given based on needs and proper drainage should be maintained during the rainy season. An average annual yield of a good betel leaf crop is about 60 to 75 leaf per plant, this yield also depends on cultivation methods variety of betel leaves.

Feeding occasionally every couple of months in the growing season of the plant with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer is recommended. keep the plant indoors in the winter season mostly at the temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit and 5 degrees Celsius in a warm and cozy room under grow light. They will not tolerate cold and sometimes shed its leaves too, but get to grow again in spring and remain in growth until fall. In such a condition keep care of watering in a limit overwatering can cause root rot.

It also suffers from fungal diseases, especially in the rainy season or overwatering is done. It’s not pest free and attacked by red mites occasionally, to save the plant watering should be reduced. Leaf blight is also a major problem that affects betel plants in which brown and black oily patches cover the leaf. This can be treated by simply pulling off the infected leaf or stem.

It’s an easy plantation and better if you buy a plant from the nursery, however, if you want to propagate it from cuttings, take about 18 cm long stem. Make 45 degrees cut using a sharp knife just below the leaf node. Remove all the leaves from the cutting except the top two leaves.
