The scientific name of buddha hand is Citrus Medica Var. Buddha’s hand is believed to have originated in India and been brought to China by Buddhist monks near the Yangtze valley. The fruit has long been prized in East Asia because it symbolizes happiness and longevity, it’s often given as an offering in the temple and served during the lunar new year. Buddha’s hand citron looks like a lumpy lemon with fingers and smells like heaven.
Buddha’s hands are like any other citron variety a shrub or small tree with long, irregular branches covered in thorns. Its large oblong leaves are pale green and grow about four to six inches. Its white flower is tinted purplish from the outside and grow in fragrant dusters. The fruit finger contains only the white part of the fruit and sometimes a small amount of acidic pulp, but many of them are completely juiceless and some are seedless.
