Jack fruits are one of the commonly consumed foods in Sri Lanka from ancient times. The scientific name of the jack fruit is Artocarpus Heterophyllus. It is nonseasonal fruit and had a major contribution to the food supply of the people and their livestock when there were short supplies of stable food grain. It is a monoecious tree and both male and female inflorescence are found on the same tree. The fertilization is by cross-pollination and the propagation is mostly through seeds. The complete fruit development process takes about three to seven months from the pollination.

Jack fruit is considered to be originated in the rain forest of the Western Ghats in the Southwestern part of India, is found in many parts of Asia, Africa, and South America. In some countries, pureed jackfruit has been processed into baby foods, juice, jam, jelly, the base for cordial, candies, fruit rolls, marmalades, jackfruits leather, and ice cream. The unripe stage is also used to prepare pickles when the fruit is tender, The seeds are also consumed after boiling and roasting or added to flour for baking and cooked in dishes. The jackfruit tree is also used for durable timber, for the preparation of furniture. The chips are used to extract the orange-red dye, which is used to color the robes of Buddhist monks. Jackfruit leaves and fruits wasted on the jack tree are used to produce fodder for cattle, pigs, and goats.

The fruit color changes from yellowish-green to yellow due to the conversion of chlorophylls, anthocyanins, and carotenoids like pigments during ripening. Depending on the variety the color of the bulb can be cream, white, light yellow, yellow, deep yellow, lemon yellow. Jack fruits are light brown, rounded shaped 2-3 cm in length by 1-1.5 cm in diameter. They are surrounded by flesh and enclosed in a white aril surrounding a thin brown spermoderm, which covers the fleshy white cotyledon. It had been found that these are rich in carbohydrates and protein. Jack fruits contain amino acid-like arginine, cystine, histidine, leucine, lysine, methionine, threonine, and tryptophan. The flesh of ripe jack fruit contains 1.9gram proteins per 100g. The protein concentration of the jack fruit seeds may vary from 5.4 to 6.9%.

Frost and cold weather damages the tree and the fruit growth and areas having these condition are not suitable for jack fruits tree. Proper jack fruit plantation requires rich and well-drained sandy loam soil. Soil drainage is the great importance to jack fruit as evidence by the sudden decline of numerous trees in the area suffering a sudden rise in water level.

Jack fruits tree requires fertile and well-drained sandy loam soil pH values of 6.0 to 8.0. As jack fruits plantation does not tolerate waterlogging, land should be selected with good drainage. Generally, jack fruit growing under rained conditions. There is no specific schedule for irrigation but jack fruit plants need watering regularly during the initial stage of 3-4 years. These trees are sensitive to drought conditions hence irrigation should be given in hot dry weather conditions. A ring system can be adopted to watering these trees. The frequency of irrigation always depends on the soil moisture-holding capacity and weather conditions. They don’t need any watering in the rainy season.
