The scientific name of Purslane is Portulaca Oleracea. Purslane is a green, leafy vegetable that can be eaten raw or cooked. It is known scientific name as Portulaca Oleracea and this plant contains about 93% water. It has a red stem and small green leaves, it can eat and taste slightly sour and salty taste. It is a good source of potassium, a mineral that helps regulate blood pressure and it may also reduce the risk of heart disease. Purslane is also a great source of magnesium, an incredibly important nutrient involves in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. Magnesium may protect against heart disease and diabetes. It also contains some calcium the most abundant mineral in the body, calcium is important for bone health.

Purslane has a smooth, reddish, mostly prostrate stem, and the leaves, which may be alternative or opposite are clustered at stem joints and ends. The yellow flowers have five regular parts and are up to 6 mm wide. Depending upon rainfall, the flower appears at any time during the year. • Should be medium watering of the plant.

• Dry to moderately moist well drained soils.

• Use only organic fertilizer for growing plants.

• Temperature should be between 10 to 38 degree Celsius.

• Portulaca plants are perennial plants.


To grow the plant in a pot choose a pot having 5-7 inch upper diameters and drainage holes. Fill the 1/3rd pot with well-drained soil rich in organic content and place it in the center of the pot. Fill the remaining pot with the same soil, keep the plant in an indirect bright light location for 2-3 days,  and then gradually move to a location that receives 4-6 hours of direct or indirect sunlight. Once the plant is evergreen in the current pot plant it into the field.

Purslane plants die every winter next year’s plant come from seed produced in previous years. Since they must start a new from seed, the first purslane plant doesn’t become visible until mid-June. Since purslane can grow from a piece of stem, a whole plant is not required for regeneration.
